Thursday and Friday.. wow.. still need more work!

Well, I'm keeping track of what I eat for this week and as hard as I try to eat ALL that we are supposed too, I still have a very hard time fitting in all that food! Now most people can, but for me, my stomach just wont let me. So I have to break things down and eat just bites at a time all during the day just to get it all in. And that is still not good. I thank God for how I can eat now because a few years ago I couldn't eat much at all. (that's a whole other story)

But this is what I had for Thursday:
I had a chicken sandwich for lunch, dinner was stirfry- full of veggies and I had a yogurt today.. Still no fruit, but, I did buy some today!

And for Friday:
Breakfast - peanut butter sandwich. Lunch - few bites of left over stir fry, dinner- whole wheat pasta with shrip sauce with toasted whole grain bread. Once again, no fruit.. but I do drink unsweetened fruit juice. I know it's not as good as having the fruit.

As you can see just from the past few days, I'm still not reaching the much needed food groups that's required each day. But as we go through this Healthy Eating, I'll go more into what is considered a healthy diet. And in doing this, it also gives you a place to start on how and where to change your diet.. So keep tracking what you eat each day and we'll work on this togehter.

Do you really eat healthy??

Just a little test here.. Do you really know if you eat ALL the foods you're supposed to? Are you getting the amounts of fruits, veggies, grains, etc.. in your diet each day?

I feel that everyone should write down every day for a week, what they eat just to see if they are eating right. So, just to see what you do intake each day, Start writing down for the rest of the week what you have for each meal and snacks. Then later this week I will post some info on what your supposed to each each day.

Even if you eat what you consider a healthy diet, you can still be lacking in many areas. So drag out a little notebook and begin to track what you consume each day.

I'm going to try and post here each day what I eat.. just so I can see how far off I am of a healthy diet. If you would like to post your eating, feel free to do so!

Tuesday - Lunch- Leftover guacamole salad with wild rice. Had tomatoes,peppers,cucumber,onions,garlic and spices.
For dinner I had squash spaghetti/sauce w/toasted wholegrain bread with olive oil and garlic. snack today was 1 slice whole wheat bread with peanut butter.
hmmm didn't get in any fruit today.

Wednesday - I had homemade manicotti, steamed green beans and stuffed eggplant with toasted rye bread with olive oil and garlic.. and I just had to treat myself.. I had a 25 cent candy bar and sprite today. Seeing I had been on the run all day, didn't leave me much time to eat anything else. So, once again.. no fruit..not enough grains and not the full serving of veggies.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Honey Baked Apples

With the fall season here, it brings us a bountiful abundance of apples and I love apples. So this week I wanted to post a very simple recipe but one that is delicious.

Honey Baked Apples:

4-6 Delicious Apples

4-6 TBL Honey

¼ cup Orange Juice

Pinch Cinnamon

I like to take my apples and cut just the tops off. Then take a melon baller and scoop out the core section. Just don’t go through to the very bottom of the apple. Then mix the Honey and Orange Juice together. Spoon this mixture into the center of the apple. Then sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. (If you like, you can also add some raisins and very fine chopped nuts to this mixture)

Place apples in baking dish. You can add just water or a little apple cider to keep the apples moist while baking. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 1 hour or until apple is tender. If your apples begin to brown to fast, simply cover your apples with a little foil.

Let cool for about 10 min. Apples will be very hot!

How does the flu spread and what can you do?

According to the CDC - Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. People with influenza can potentially infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

What can you do to protect yourself and family?

1- build your body immune system. Take lots of Vitamin C during the cold and flu season. With your body built up, you are able to fight off colds and flu much better and in some cases may not even catch it. Why? Because your immune system is so strong, it can fight it as it attacks you. That's why I am strongly suggesting to everyone to start an all-natural Sustained Released Vitamin C. With this, it is released into your system over a period of time. It’s not dumped in all at once. You will want to take several during the day to build your system. And also your children’s system. They are in daycare and schools where others are not building their systems. So you want to keep your child’s system built up to fight off anything that’s going around in your school or daycare.

2- Come off of sugar or cut back as much as you can. Sugar suppresses the immune system. There is enough sugar in one can of soft drink to suppress the immune system for 8 hours.

New Study Compares Shaklee Performance vs Gatorade and Kidney Stone Risk

When you are the leader in the natural food supplement industry, people sometimes test your products without you even knowing about it.

That was exactly what happened with a recent study comparing the effects of Shaklee’s Performance and Gatorade on the risk of kidney stone formation.

This was the ultimate independent study.

Shaklee didn’t initiate it. They didn’t support it. And, in fact, they didn’t even know about it until it was published a couple of weeks ago (J.W. Goodman et al, Urol. Res., 37: 41-46, 2009).

Before I get into the results of the study, perhaps I should start with an explanation of why you would even want to do that kind of study.
Let’s start with the problem - kidney stones. They are extremely painful, and they can damage the kidney - particularly if they form over and over again.

To a urologist the solution is simple - just drink two liters of water a day.

The problem is that you have to really, really, really like water to drink two liters a day, and most people just aren’t that into water.
In fact, previous studies had shown that even when patients had a previous kidney stone and were told by their urologist to drink two liters of water a day, the average result was an increase of only 0.3 liters a day of water.

So this group of urologists asked what people were drinking instead of water.

The latest trends show that soft drink consumption is decreasing and consumption of sports drinks and energy drinks is increasing. And, there was absolutely no information on whether sports drinks increased or decreased the risk of kidney stone formation.

So they decided to look at two well-known sports drinks, Shaklee’s Performance and Gatorade, to see whether they would increase or decrease the risk of kidney stone formation compared to the consumption of an equivalent amount of water.

They looked at the effect of each sports drink on the amount of citrate in the urine and by how much they increased the pH of the urine because each of these decreases the risk of kidney stone formation.

They also looked at the effect of each sports drink on the amount of sodium and calcium in the urine because each of those increases the risk of kidney stone formation.

Performance significantly increased the amount of citrate and the pH of the urine, while Gatorade had no effect on either of them.
Neit her Performance or Gatorade had an significant effect on sodium or calcium levels in the urine.

Thus, they concluded that Shaklee’s Performance was superior to either Gatorade or water alone at deceasing the risk of kidney stone formation.

Now you might be tempted to say that this study was of more interest to urologists than the general public. But my guess is that if you have ever suffered through a kidney stone this study is of great interest to you.

But to me the more important conclusion is that, once again, independent clinical studies show the superiority of Shaklee products.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Stuffed Peppers with Tomato Sauce

This Greek dish represents the principles of Mediterranean food, the main component being vegetables, made substantial with a rice and lamb filling.

Ingredients:
8 small green peppers, tops sliced off, cored, and seeded
1/3 cup olive oil
2 onions, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3 TBSP red wine
1 TBSP honey
1 TBSP tomato paste
3 lb. plum tomatoes, peeled and chopped
1 cinnamon stick
2 cloves
1 fresh bay leaf
salt and black pepper
1-1/2 cups chicken stock
1/2 lb. ground lamb
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 cup long-grain rice, rinsed and drained. ( I use brown rice or wild rice)

Directions:
1-Bring a pan of water to boil and cook the peppers and tops for 5 min. Drain and set aside.
2-To make the sauce, heat half the oil and add half the onion and garlic. Stew gently for 10 min., until the onion is soft. Add the wine, honey and tomato paste. Let simmer 1 min.
3- Add the tomatoes, cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaf and seasonings. Simmer, uncovered, for 30 min., until the sauce is thick.
4-Strain the sauce through a sieve and set aside. Heat the stock to the boiling point.
5- To make the filling, warm the rest of the oil and add the remaining onion and garlic. Cook gently for 10 min., until the onions is soft. Turn up the heat and add the lamb, ground spices, and seasonings. Cook for 5 min. , stirring, to brown meat.
6- Add the rice to the lamb mixture. Stir well, then pour over the boiling stock. Cook over gentle heat for 15 min., until all the liquid has been absorbed and small holes appear in the surface.
7- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Stuff the peppers with the rice mixture and replace their tops. Pack them into a dish and pour over the sauce. Cover and bake for 1 hour. Allow to cool before serving - this dish is best made a day in advance.

PLEASANTON, Calif. – May 19, 2009 – Research supported by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., shows that a lower blood vitamin D level is associated with metabolic syndrome and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The study results were presented at the National Lipid Association Annual Scientific Sessions in Miami, Florida and suggest an important role of vitamin D nutrition for maintaining cardiovascular health.

In this study, intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements was strongly linked with vitamin D levels in the blood. The greater the intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements, the higher the amount of vitamin D found in the blood. More importantly, as vitamin D intakes increased, HDL cholesterol (or “good cholesterol”) levels increased as well. Future research is needed to determine if vitamin D from dietary supplements can lower risk levels for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

“Our next study, which is already underway, is intended to confirm causality by showing that vitamin D supplementation improves cardiovascular risk factors,” says Dr. Jamie McManus M.D., Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education, Shaklee Corporation.

Maki, PhD, the study’s Principal Investigator and the Chief Science Officer of Provident Clinical Research, Glen Ellyn, IL, says, “Results from population studies suggest that a low serum vitamin D concentration is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, but this is the first study to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular risk factors in a group that includes a large number of vitamin D supplement users.” He continues, “Additional research is warranted to assess whether increasing vitamin D intake will improve the metabolic cardiovascular risk factor profile.”

When’s a Good Time to Drink Water?

Most people wait to drink until they are thirsty or until they have a dry mouth. By the time you are most likely already mildly dehydrated. A dry mouth is one of the last signs of dehydration.

Other people only drink during meals, another mistake. When you drink too much with a meal, it washes out the hydrochloric acid, digestive juices, and enzymes in your stomach and intestines, which delays digestion. Fluids, and iced drinks in particular, quench the digestive process similarly to pouring water on fire.

You can drink during meals, but drink filtered room-temperature water with a slice of lemon or lime squeezed into it or unsweetened tea. But don’t go over-board. Meals are not the time to get most of your fluids. Stick to four to eight ounces with a meal.

Here are some rules of thumb about when to drink water:

Drink fifteen to thirty minutes before meals or two hours after.
Only drink four to eight ounces of room-temperature water at meals.
Do not drink much water past 7:00 pm; because it may interfere with your sleep.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Caponata

With Eggplant in season, I just had to post this recipe. We hope you enjoy it.

Caponata
Ingredients
1- eggplant - about 3 lbs. (2 lg.)
1 Tbl. salt
Pear Tomatoes 1-1/2 lbs. (or 1 - 14.5 oz. can)
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 med. yellow onion - chopped
2 ribs celery - chopped
2 cloves garlic - minced
1/4 tsp. dried red chili flakes
1 (7-3/4 oz can)Green Olives - drained
2 Tbl. capers
1/4 cup fresh parsley, minced
1/4 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice.

Directions:
Trim off and discard the stem end from the eggplant. Cut the eggplant into 3/4-inch cubes. Place the cubes in a colander and sprinkle with salt. Set aside in the sink or over a bowl and allow to drain for 1 hour. Rinse briefly and dry thoroughly with paper towels.

Meanwhile, blanch and peel the tomatoes. Chop them into a bowl to catch their juice. Set aside.

Heat oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add the onion, celery, garlic, and chili flakes. Saute for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, then mix in the eggplant and saute 5 more minutes. Add the tomatoes along with their juice. Reduce to low, cover, and simmer 10 minutes. stir in the olives and capers and continue to cook 20-25 minutes, until the eggplant is tender but not mushy. Stir in the parsley and lemon juice until well combined. Serve at room temperature.

Don't Say "Diet", That's a No, No, Word

Now this is an old post that I done on another blog some time ago. I feel that it's a great post and have had numbers of people contact me about it and ask for help. So, I felt it was worth re-posting on my new blog.

We have made great changes, but still more to go and as a family we are still working together.

Well, I have been working with my family on changing some things in our lives and our eating habits is the biggest one. Now, I have learned over the years don't tell your family or yourself we/I are going on a diet.. That is a big No, No word to most people. Say the word diet and all of a sudden everyone thinks I have to deprive myself of all the good things to eat. And this just doesn't work. This scares people thinking all they can have to eat is rabbit food so to speak haha.. but when you make it your goal to change things in your life and take it in steps, you'll get much further.

But what I have learned is to tell my family we are just changing a few things. We are going to eat better. Now, I'm a vegetable person, but hubby likes to sneak out and get those snacks. But we are getting older and I think it has hit him this past few months that things have to change. When you're young you think nothing will ever touch you and never hurt you, but as we all know, years come on us fast and our thinking begins to change.

Most every Sunday we go out for lunch after church.. but after tying to take care of some of my health matters I told my husband I don't want to get fast food all the time. I want a place that serves veggies and such. Not to many places like that around here. I told him, I'm working on building my health and I don't want a cholesterol burger and a side of thunder thighs and every time you want to go to those places, that's just what you're asking me to eat. Yes I know they have salads but I wanted something with more substance and filling.

So we all sat down just before the holidays and began talking. We agreed to begin to eat better. Yes, I cook veggies and fruits in the house and we take our supplements, but we needed more. The first words was.....Oh No, not another diet!! and my response to them was No, it's not a diet. We are simply going to eat better. We are all going to cut back on snacks and eat better ones. That they could live with. The diet word just seems to be a No, No word.

So, with all of us setting there we devised a plan for eating better. And when you all work together it seems to be so much easier. But we all agreed that we would not start this until after the holidays. Just to much going on, parties and such to go to. So holidays are not a good time to do that.

So, our plan is
1- we all agreed that we would break it down into workable meals. So what we came up with is this.
Monday - Green Night - here we eat all veggies and no meat.
Tuesday - Salad Night - Here we find all kinds of salad recipes and will be working those in. And they can include meat
Wednesday - Casserole Night - here we find all kinds of casserole recipes and they will be veggie based, with some meats added and salads
Thursday - Soup Night - Here we can have all kinds of soups/stews along with salad
Friday - Meat night - we work this with baked meats, all the veggies we want along with salad
Saturday - Pasta/Stir Fry Night - Here we'll use whole wheat past dishes. Adding more veggies than meat. Or we'll have Stir Fry.
Sunday - FREE Day. We can go out to eat, but it still has to be healthy foods and we can have a treat

On top of this, we are getting out walking more. Now I know in the winter this can be hard for some, but we live in a part of the country where we don't have tons of snow or ice, so we can walk more. It's a brisk walk in the early morning for me and hubby and my daughter works out at school, but comes home and rides her bike. And for me I have added Palates during the day.

Now most will ask, what about desserts.. well, we have gone to fruit salads after dinner, I make low fat and sugar recipes. I just change up the ingredients to make it fit in. And there are tons of great recipes on the net that you can find. We still eat wholesome meals and have great snacks too. So it doesn't seem like you're on a diet. And when the girls come home from school and want something to eat, I fix them a Meal Shake drink in no fat milk and I add 1/2 banana and few frozen strawberries. Mix that up along with some apple wedges or oranges and the girls are set. Gives them all the protein and vitamins they need and cuts any sugar cravings too. And you can keep whole wheat cereal on hand..this works great and filling. And for breakfast I fix them a Soy Protien drink with some added fruit and works great. Very filling and cuts the sugar cravings as well.

So it is possible to change your families health and not use the No, No word "diet". It just takes changes and it takes commitment on your part as well. Start out by talking to your family. Have everyone set down and help plan. Have the kids help choose recipes. Ask your spouse to help you pick out different dishes. If they have a favorite dish, don't just do away with it. Save it for special occasions or your free night. You don't have to deprive yourself of all those yummy food, just make some easy changes and you'll begin to see the difference in just a few weeks.

Healthy Recipe Friday - German Soft Pretzels

German Soft Pretzels

Now, I'm not sure just how healthy this will be, but it's more fun than anything. We are making these tonight as a family fun time. We try to do this every so often. It brings us together to just have fun as a family. You know, times that make memories. And I used to love those big pretzels you got at the mall with mustard.. so this should be fun!
Hope you enjoy.

Ingredients:
1 pkg active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (about 110 degrees)
2-1/2 to 3 cups of all-purpose flour (here I will use organic unbleached wheat flour instead)
2 TBL salad oil ( I'll be using Olive Oil)
1 TBL sugar
6 TBL Baking Soda in 6 cups of water
Coarse Salt

Directions:
In a bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add 1-1/2 cups of the flour, the oil and sugar. Beat for about 3 min to make a smooth batter. Gradually stir in enough of the remaining flour (about 1 cup) to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured board and knead until smooth and satiny (about 5 min.) adding flour as needed to prevent sticking. Place dough in greased bowl; turn over to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled . (about 1 hour)

Punch dough down, turn out onto floured board, and divide into 12 pieces. Shape each into a smooth ball by gently kneading. The roll each into a smooth rope about 18 inches long, and twist into a pretzel shape. Place slightly apart on greased baking sheet (at least 12 X 15 inches), turning loose end underneath. Let rise, uncovered, until puffy (about 25 min.).

Meanwhile, in a 3 quart stainless steel or enameled pan (don't use aluminum), bring soda-water mixture to boiling; adjust heat to keep water boiling gently. With a slotted spatula, lower 1 pretzel at a time into pan. Let simmer for 10 seconds on each side, then lift from water, drain briefly on spatula, and return to baking sheet. Let dry briefly, then sprinkle with coarse salt and let stand, uncovered, until all have been simmered.

Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 12 to 15 min. or until golden brown. Transfer to racks; serve warm with butter or mustard. Or let cool completely, wrap airtight, and freeze. To reheat, place frozen pretzels on un-greased baking sheets and bake in preheated 400 degree oven for about 10 min. or until hot.

Makes 1 dozen pretzels.

This is a very good question. I know parents are concerned about the products they purchase for their children. And you have to be cautious today on products we buy. Now more than ever we are looking for safe products that are not laced with synthetics, chemicals, preservatives and dyes. So much awareness is out here today about what is going into every thing we purchase.

My suggestion is to start out with the multi-vitamins for your children. Then work your way through the different products. For older children you may want to go to Meal Shakes along with the vitamins. Gives them a well-rounded start to each day.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Grilled Veggie Packets

Well, It's been some time since I have posted any recipes and figured I better jump in here today and post one haha..

Today for our dinner, we fixed veggie packets. Something we all love around here and super easy to make. There is no particular order in which to make them, we just put in what we love to eat.

What I do is cut up all kinds of vegetables. Everything from potatoes to squash, mushrooms, broccoli . Today for our packets I cut up new potatoes, patty pan squash, Japanese Eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, broccoli, fresh spinach, baby carrots, asparagus and for those who just had to have meat, we added some minute stakes.

I have all this laid out on plates or platters and everyone picks the veggies they want. We then use the super wide foil, lay our veggies out on that and then drizzle with olive oil and spices. Tightly close foil and place on hot grill for about 30 min.

In 30 minutes you have a complete meal all done and ohhhhhh so good! I also done some grilled Romain lettuce. Just cut them in half. Leave root on end to keep it together. I drizzle EVOO all over it, the little sea salt and spices and grill just long enough to get the charred marks on it. Just enough to get that grill flavor. Then I make my own EVOO dressing to pour over it.

I simply use olive oil, balsamic vinegar, fresh herbs from the garden. I used Basil, Thyme, Oregano, minced garlic and dash of salt.. then whisk together and drizzle over lettuce.. you can also add a little Feta cheese. It's wonderful!

What's fun about this meal is everyone gets to throw in the veggies they like and this way your family is getting a healthy dose of veggies.

I received the "Most Wonderful Favorite" Award

Today started out as a great day, but when I came home and started checking my emails it jumped up to a Wonderful day! Much to my surprise I opened an email and and found that I had received the Most Wonderful Favorite Award from Sunflower Ranch for my blog. All I can say is thank you so much for this award. My whole desire for this blog is to be able to reach out and touch others and help those that I come in contact with. And to receive this award brings great joy to my heart that others stand up and take notice.. So thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Why A Mediterranean Diet.

So many people today are searching for the right diet. They try no carbs, lots of carbs, no protein, and lots of protein, cabbage soup diets, and all sorts of other diets. We search and search, but we never look at what actually works. A simple life change diet.

What’s wrong with us here in America?
Processed foods!! We eat all kinds of processed food, fast foods, boxed foods, and quick microwave foods. Foods high in fats, sugars and chemicals. And we wonder why we never get healthy or loose weight. We try everything but the right thing. And we don’t take the time to cook actual foods ourselves.

I know how everyone feels; I have been there before myself. Trying to take care of job, family, home and running. Just to come home and pop what I could on for dinner. But over time I began to see changes in our health and I knew there were things that had to be done. I poured over diets, talked to doctors and it wasn’t until I began reading about the Mediterranean diet that I realized this is what we need.

Why the Mediterranean diet?
Well, it’s a life change. People have been doing it for centuries and living better and longer. They take time to prepare fresh foods; they spend time together while eating. They take their time to eat and it’s not a rush through thing. They have lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, better over all health and they live longer.

So just what is this Mediterranean diet?
It’s a diet that puts fresh foods together. More fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, herbs and spices. Meats are not the main course of the meals. They are the sides. It’s more fresh fish and seafood. And fish that’s not deep-fried. They don’t use processed sugars, they use honey. And desserts are fresh fruits and the one main thing in a Mediterranean diet is olives and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Olive oil is known to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and great for your skin. And it’s filled with vitamins and antioxidants. And they drink red wine with their meals. The wine in moderation, but it’s very good for your digestive system.

So how do you start shopping for Mediterranean diet?
The biggest thing is, don’t purchase processed foods. Stay away from the boxed stuff, sugar cereals, breakfast pop tarts, white breads and pastas, white processed sugar, artificial sweeteners, lard, margarine, soft drinks, candies and such. I know, I just wiped out the largest part of everyone’s shopping list. But believe me, It can be done.

A general rule of thumb is to stick to the produce sections, purchase whole grain breads and pasta. Purchase more herbs and seasonings for your foods. Go with more deep ocean fish and seafood. Use leaner cuts of meats. Use whole-wheat flour instead of bleached all purpose flour. Simply put, purchase foods you have to cook yourself and not already done for you.

Set down and begin planning a menu. See where you can make changes in your diet. Introduce new vegetables into your families’ meals gradually. Purchase a bread machine and begin making your own bread. It’s not hard, just fill and let it make. And you can even find a good one on Ebay. Search the Internet for menu plans, recipes, and cookbooks. Two cookbooks that I use are “The Best 125 Meatless Mediterranean Dishes” and Sarah Woodward – “The Classic Mediterranean Cookbook” . They are both wonderful and helpful. I would suggest looking for them on Amazon.com . And begin searching for Vegetarian menus. These will have wonderful recipes.

What will happen when I do this?
By making a life change to a more Mediterranean diet lifestyle, you will begin to see changes in your health and your family. You will begin to have more energy, loose weight and enjoy life more. Why? Because you stop to take the time for the most important thing in your life… you and your family.

Helpful Tips On Kicking The Sugar Habit.

Many Americans consume large amounts of refined sugars. According to a study by the USDA, the average American consumes anywhere between 150 to 170 pounds of simple sugars, also known as refined sugars (this includes glucose, fructose, and sucrose) or simple carbohydrates, in one year. Many of us don’t even realize just how much sugar we take in each day. It’s in much of our processed foods, things like pop tarts, cereals, soft drinks, breakfast bars, juices, sauces, breads, mixes and more. In one can of 12 oz. soda there is 8 oz. of sugar.

Sugar is void of any key vitamins and minerals, has no B vitamins, chromium, magnesium, zinc or other trace minerals that the body needs to digest and metabolize it. To move sugar through the body it will take the valuable B vitamins and other trace minerals and rob your body of the nutrients that it needs.

To many people sugar is an addiction. No different than any other drug people become addicted too. And when trying to come off sugar you will experience withdrawals as with any other addiction. What you can experience is loss of energy, mood swings, depression, headaches and flu like symptoms. In all honesty you will feel worse before you begin to feel better. But these symptoms will pass. And within a few weeks you will begin to have energy, no headaches and no depression. You will have to keep this in mind when you begin to come off of refined sugars and know that it will pass.

What does sugar do to your system?
It suppresses your immune system. One 12 oz. can of soda will suppress your immune system for 6 to 8 hours. So during that time your body has a hard time fighting off colds, flu and other things that attack you.

It depletes your body of Vitamin B. You need B vitamins to build red blood cells, for healthy blood vessels and nervous system, and to maintain body metabolism. B vitamins are important for the breakdown of foods and nutrients to yield energy.

Sugar depletes your body of calcium and magnesium. Depletion of these can cause such things as osteoporosis, arthritis, leg cramps, depression, PMS problems and more.

Sugar causes weight gain, can raise your cholesterol and Sugar can speed the aging process, causing wrinkles and grey hair.

And this is just a very small list of what could happen and does happen to your body when you consume processed sugar.

So, how can you kick the sugar habit?

  • Simple.. Plan for it. If you simply go and say ok, I’m quitting sugar today and fail to plan you will surly fail. But with a plan in hand you can begin to work on the process and come off of processed sugars. I will share some tips on how to plan and work to come off of sugar.

    Make your plan. Tell family and friends, Look, I’m working to get off processed sugars and I may experience some mood swings, be a little snappy. But please understand that I don’t mean to do this, it’s just one of the side effects of coming off sugar.

    Get rid of processed foods that contain sugar in your home. Such as white pasta, rice and breads. Go to whole-wheat products and brown rice.

    Plan for stress times. When you start to crave sugar, keep a good High Protein Drink close or High Protein Bar for snaking. These will help cut your sugar cravings and filled with vitamins your body needs.

    Begin by cutting back on soft drinks. Say you drink 3 or 4 bottles of soft drink each day. Start by cutting back by one bottle. Do this for several days to a week and then cut another bottle off your list. Drink lots of filtered water. Drinking water will help filter out and flush your system.

    Begin to change those sweet treats you used to eat with more fresh fruits. Purchase more fruits and veggies to snack on. Keep bananas, strawberries and grapes on hand when you want to snack.

    Add a good B-Complex and calcium & magnesium to your diet. These things have been robbed for years from the sugar and you want to start to replenish them. B-Complex will also give you energy in those sluggish times.

    Do not add artificial sweeteners to your diet. Many of these contain aspartame, found in Nutrasweet or Equal, which has been associated with dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, flushed feelings, seizures, blurred vision, and depression. And can actually cause you to crave sugary sweet things. Use instead, pure unfiltered honey, pure maple sugar, or date sugar. These are equally sweet, are generally well tolerated, and have greater nutritional value than refined sugar. But even these will need to be used in moderation.

  • Plan your meals. I know that many may have a hard time doing this, but if you will set down and plan your meals, you control how much sugar goes into your system. Stay away from the quick processed foods. Do more cooking with fresh ingredients. Start taking your own lunches to work to avoid vending machines.

    And understand that you will feel bad for a while. Give yourself some slack and know if you do happen to fall off the plan, that’s ok, you can pick yourself back up and start again. Just keep working at it and in time you will begin to feel better than you have in years. Keep yourself focused on the goal and not the symptoms you are going through. And that’s better health for you.

Benefits of Garlic Supplement.

Garlic, also known as allium sativum, is related to the lily family, which includes onions, shallots, chives and leaks.

Garlic has been used to help lower cholesterol. Lower serum cholesterol, lower triglycerides and help raise HDL, good cholesterol. It has been used to increase blood fluidity and to help lower high blood pressure.

People have used garlic as a natural way to help fight such things as bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Yeast infections in women. People have taken garlic to fight colds and flu, sinus infections and common warts.

Garlic has also been used to fight sore throat. Simply take garlic capsule and break it apart. Mix into a little mashed potatoes and swallow. You want the garlic to coat the throat to relieve soreness and fight infection.

There are a few cautions for those wanting to consume garlic supplements.
Garlic supplements should not be used by those on blood thinners or at least 2 weeks prior to any surgery. And pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult physican before taking any supplements.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Brown Rice Supper

Well this week has been pretty busy, and a bit late getting this recipe up. but it's one I love to make and enjoy here. We hope you enjoy as well.

Brown Rice Supper
2 Tbl. Olive Oil
4 pork chops, cut 1/2 inch thick ( Can use chicken here in place of pork chops)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
1 medium onion, sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup uncooked brown rice
1- 10 1/2 oz. Can beef broth - low sodium (can use chicken broth if using chicken)
1 – 14 1/2 oz. Can stewed tomatoes
1/2 cup water
1 tsp. crushed thyme leaves

Directions:
1- In a 6-qt. Dutch oven over medium heat, in hot oil, cook pork chops(or chicken) until browned on all sides. Remove from pan.
2-To drippings, ad vegetables, onion and garlic; cook until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently.
3-Add rice; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
4-Stir in beef broth (or chicken broth), tomatoes with their liquid, water and thyme.
5-Arrange pork chops over rice. Heat till boiling. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 1 hour or until rice is tender, stirring occasionally. Ad more water during cooking, if mixture appears dry. Uncover; let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Healthy Recipe Friday - Grilled Vegetable Sandwich

I am so excited that spring is here and I am able to plant my herbs and veggies. And with that I get excited that I will be able to have fresh grilled veggie sandwiches.

These can be done in any number of ways and with most any vegetable that you enjoy. But I love the Zucchini and Eggplant combination.


MARINADE
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1 1/2 cups olive oil
2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon sugar
Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Vegetables:
1 large zucchini, sliced 3/4 inch thick on diagonal
1 medium Japanese eggplant, sliced 3/4 inch thick on diagonal (can use reg. egg plant)
1 medium yellow squash, sliced 3/4 inch thick on diagonal


Toppings:
Crusty Whole Wheat Loaf Bread
Baby Spinach
1 large red onion, sliced thin
1 tomato, thinly sliced Or you can use Sun Dried Tomatoes chopped
Thin sliced mushrooms (if desired)
Chopped Olives
Cheese such as Goat Cheese or I like to sprinkle on some feta for the saltiness of it.

Combine all ingredients for marinade and pour over sliced vegetables, marinate for 30 minutes. Cook on a hot grill for 2-3 minutes on each side.

Take remainder of marinade and brush both halves of your bread and take one clove of garlic and rub on bread. Grill/broil until just toasted. You can also use a little mayo mixed with minced garlic and herbs to spread on bread. And you can also spread goat cheese on your bread.

Take your grilled veggies and place on bottom of bread and then put desired toppings on. Sprinkle with little salt and fresh ground pepper to taste and place top on bread.

Now just set back, eat and Enjoy!

Going Green Reusable Bag Give Away


Over the years I have wondered about using plastic bags. I, myself have used them countless times. But I often wondered what happens to all these bags? You see them on the road sides, tops of trees, in our waterways, and I have even seen them in birds nests. Healthy Recipe Friday - Creamy Fruit Salad

Here is a great dessert for those fun summer days, or when having friends over or for that special ladies get togther out on the patio. Simple, fast and easy.

Creamy Fruit Salad

Ingredients:
1-8 oz. carton of Vanilla Yogurt
2 Tbsp. Dairy Sour Cream
½ tsp. Vanilla
1 can (15 ¼ oz.) Pineapple Chunks (in it’s own juice) drained
1-can (15 oz.) Mandarin Oranges, drained
1 cup seedless green grapes
1 banana sliced
1 cup mini marshmallows
¼ cup sliced almonds
¼ cup flaked coconut

Directions:
In large bowl, combine yogurt, sour cream and vanilla. Next, stir in all fruit until combined.
Chill in fridge for 2 to 24 hours.

Serve chilled; Makes 6 – 1 cup servings.

Natural ways to fight head lice.

I know this is not a subject that most like to think about, but it can happen to the best of us at times when you have children in school, day care, camps, etc.. But there are ways that you can help get rid of head lice besides the pesticide treatments.

Once you have checked and determined that your child has lice, there are a few things you need to do to keep others in your home from catching it. The one most important thing is to not share a comb or hairbrush. For little girls, don’t share headbands. For little boys, don’t share caps. But just a note here, Lice cannot live in your mattress, pillows or bedcovers. But it’s always best to wash them

1- Wash all bedding in hot water and make sure you change the sheets, blankets and covers.
2- Remove all combs and brushes. Seeing you can purchase new inexpensive ones, I would make a trip to the store instead of trying to boil them.
3- Wash all clothes the child has had on and any hats, coats and sweaters during the winter months.
4- And I would wash all towels that they have come in contact with. And until you know you have the head lice gone. I would make sure the child uses their own towels for a week or so. This way it’s not passed on to others in the home.

Natural treatments:
This is just a simple list of natural ways that I have searched out on getting rid of head lice. I would suggest doing the treatment several times until you’re sure that they are all gone. But the best way of all to remove head lice is by setting down and combing one section at a time until you have the head cleared. Leaving just one egg behind can cause your child’s re-infestation in 2 weeks. So it is very important that for 2 weeks you continue to comb and treat until you are sure there are no eggs left. Always check behind ears and at the back of the hairline. As this is where you will find many of them.

1 – Conditioner. Here you can use dollar store conditioner. (If you can, get a conditioner with Tea Tree Oil). Apply to child’s hair while it’s dry. Using a lg. Tooth comb, comb through hair to make sure it’s completely saturated. Use a small nit comb (I suggest the ones with metal combs. They can run around $8 at local store) to comb through hair. Wipe comb clean after each swipe. Start at the top of the child’s head and follow the scalp without lifting comb out of hair. Follow down to the ends with each swipe. This can help remove the lice and eggs. You can leave conditioner on over night and comb through again in the morning. Then wash and rinse hair. This may have to be done several times to get rid of all the lice.

2 – Tea Tree Oil - If you can find it, purchase shampoo with tea tree oil, but if you can’t, you can add 8 – 10 drops to a bottle of shampoo. Wet the child’s hair, and while shampoo is on their head, comb through with nit comb. If hair becomes dry, simply spray with water in spray bottle and continue to comb. After combing, wash child’s head and rinse. Continue to comb after rinsing. And depending on the severity of them, you may need to do this several times. And to keep head lice away, use the Tea tree oil Shampoo often.

3- Listerine – This I have read that you can use this to fight lice. Wash and rinse child’s hair. Towel dry and then saturate with Listerine. Cover child’s hair with shower cap for 2 hours. Then remove cap and comb with nit comb. The next day, wash and rinse the child’s hair again. Then spray the child’s head with Listerine and comb through again. Depending on the infestation, this may take a couple of treatments.


4- Mayonnaise and oils. I know I have read about people using mayo and different oils to help fight. The biggest thing with these treatments is smothering the lice and making the hair slick so that you can comb through and remove eggs and bugs. With using oils though, you will have to wash the hair several times to ensure you get all the oils out.


I would try using the most natural and safe way possible for your child on trying to fight lice. It’s safer for them and over the years lice have built up immunity to many OTC treatments.
